Why Lord Ganesh is The Gate Keeper of Holy Shrines

 Ganesh is a Hindu God, here is the story of how he came to be and why he is know as the gate keeper.

Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of death and destruction was away at a war. His wife Pavarti, who was a goddess in her own right, wished to bathe. Having no-one to guard the door to her apartments she conceived of the idea of giving birth to a son who could provide this service for her. Thus Ganesh was created, since goddesses have the power to do such things.

Pavarti gave Ganesh instructions that he was to stand guard at the entrance of her apartments and that he was to admit no-one until she gave word that it was OK to do so. Ganesh took up his post and undertook his assignment enthusiastically.

In due course the Lord Shiva returned from his war and went to enter. Ganesh, according to his instructions, forbade him entry. Shiva was enraged by Ganesh’s impudence and drew his sword and cut off Ganesh's head.

Pavarti emerged to find Ganesh decapitated and flew into a rage. Even though he was immensely powerful Shiva was upset with Pavarti’s rage. He swore to make amends by taking the head of the first living thing he found to replace Ganesh’s head. The first animal he came across was an elephant. Accordingly he took the head from the elephant an placed it on Ganesh’s body.

Thus Ganesh is depicted with an elephant’s head. Because of his role as protector of Parvarti's door  he is associated, in Hindu culture, with protecting entrances.

Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram (sometimes called Ram Dhun) is a popular bhajan (Hindu devotional song) that was a favorite of Mahatma Gandhi.

The version popularized by Mahatma Gandhi:


रघुपित राघव राजाराम, पितत पावन सीताराम

ईश्वर अल्लाह तेरो नाम, सब को सन्मि तदे भगवान


Translation :   Lord Rama, Chief of the house of Raghu, Uplifters of those who have fallen, (O divine couple) Sita and Rama, Beloved, praise Sita and Rama, God or Allah is your name, (meaning that the supreme can be called by many names) Lord, bless everyone with this wisdom.

 I hope every body knows the straight meaning of “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, patit pavan Seetaram.” But there is a deep philosophy hidden in its bottom. It is known to every body that one thing that keeps the Creation durable and alive is worry/care/concern (Chinta), which is hidden in the whole body and works in two ways. If that is not there, no being can be called a living being.

Read This When you are planning to SHIRIDI- SAIRAM

 Some important tips one must bear in mind while planning a visit to Shirdi 

1.     All formal worship of Shri Sai like Mangal Snan (Holy bath), Abhishek, Aarti are performed in the Samadhi temple only. The temple opens at 5.00 a.m. but the devotees make the darshan queue before 4.00 a.m..
2.     No offerings like garland, flowers,  coconut, cloth etc. are accepted during Mangal Snan (Holy bath), ceremonial worship (Shodashopachaar) and aartis (all four aartis).
3.     The first ‘darshan’ of the day, begins after the morning programme of worship (Morning aarti, Mangal Snan, Shodashopachar ) at around 7.00 AM. The offering are accepted only during 'Darshan' hours
4.     Any offering like any ceremonial gift or cloth are registered in the Donation Office of the Trust before being offered in the temple. In case, devotees wish to take back the offered cloth as a token of blessing they need not to register the same in the office. The offered cloth and articles come for sale at sale counter of the trust. The public auction takes place on Thursday and Sunday around 10.00 a.m. near Satyanarayan puja hall.
5.     If devotee wishes to donate cash, should either deposit it in the Donation Office (with due receipt) or put it directly into one of the donation boxes, placed at all important places of temple complex.
6.     Photography (still or movie) is strictly prohibited during Mangal Snan (Holy bath) of Baba and Aartis (all four aartis). Devotees may take photographs during the hours of darshan only, for video recording a prior permission of the Temple-in-charge is required.
7.     In the Samadhi temple for standing in the main hall, the arrangement of queue for ladies and gents is separate. This should be particularly borne in mind while taking along the small children.
8.     There is by and large no restriction on darshan during the day in Dwarkamai masjid, Chawri, Gurusthan and Nanda deep except a few minutes while attending to the dhuni or offering food to Shri Sai.
9.     In Chawri ladies are not allowed to enter the section where Baba used to retire to sleep in old times.
10.  The main temple (Samadhi Mandir) is open from 5.00 AM to 10.30 PM, where as Dwarkamai masjid, Chawri, Gurusthan are closed around 8.30 PM.
11. On the main day of celebrations on important occasions like Ram Navami, Dussehra, Guru purnima the temple is open throughout the night for darshan. On such occasions special programmes of devotional songs are organised by the Trust. On the days when the temple is open through night, the ‘Shej aarti’ (Night aarti) is not offered and the daily programme of the following day begins without the morning aarti (from Mangal Snan onwards).
12.  On every Thursday ‘Palki’ procession takes place at around 9.15 p.m. from Samadhi Mandir to Dwarkamai and then to Chawri. On important occasions like Ram Navami, Dussehra, Guru purnima,    Shivratri and Ekadashi (Ashaad / Kartik) ‘Palki’ goes around the Shirdi village. Shej aarti (Night aarti) is offered only after the ‘Palki’ returns to the Samadhi temple.
13.  Always keep your footwear safely at the footwear-counter provided in the temple complex. If they are not deposited in the indicated place they may get lifted in no time!
14.  All the priests and workers in the temples are employees of the Shirdi Sai Sansthan. Therefore, no gifts or donations should be offered to them.
15.  Be cautious about the prices while taking the garland,  coconut etc (as a package) from the nearby shops. You may avoid being overcharged by them.
16.  A similar word of caution for those who offer to donate milk to the dogs and food to the beggars.
17.  Avoid the touts for getting an accommodation. It is advisable to approach any hotel/lodge directly. There is a wide choice of hotels/lodges in Shirdi, suiting the budget of all. 

For the convenience of devotees there are : 

•  A canteen for the tea/coffee/refreshments.
•  A canteen ‘Prasadalay’ giving subsidised meals.
•  Railway reservation counter (limited quota)
•  State Transport Bus Booking Counter.
•  A publication counter of the Sansthan (Sai leela magazine, Sai Satcharitra and other Sai literature)
•   Lockers to keep the things safe when the visit to Shirdi is for a few hours at 'Sulabh' complex, situated near 'Prasadalaya'.
•   Udi (sacred ash) is the most blessed thing to take home with you from this pilgrimage. It is distributed (a spoonful only) outside the Samadhi temple through the ‘Udi’ counter after Noon aarti and Evening aarti

Powerful Goddess Kanchi Kamakshi -Shakthi Peetam

The Kamakshi Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated toKamakshi, one of the forms of the goddess Parvati. It is located in the historic city of Kanchipuram, near Chennai, India and is popularly associated with Sankaracharya, one of the greatest Hindu gurus. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, the Akilandeswari temple in Thiruvanaikaval near Tiruchirappalli and this Kamakshi are the important centers of worship of Parvati as the mother goddess, in the state of Tamil Nadu. The temple was most probably built by the Pallava kings, whose capital was Kanchipuram, around 6 C.E.


 The main deity, Kamakshi, is seated in a majestic Padmasana, an yogic posture signifying peace and prosperity, instead of the traditional standing pose. The goddess holds a sugarcane bow and bunch of flowers in the lower two of her arms and has a pasha (lasso), an ankusha (goad) in her upper two arms.

There is also a parrot perched near the flower bunch. There are no other Parvati temples in the city of Kanchipuram, apart from this temple, which is unusual in a traditional city that has hundreds of traditional temples.

There are various legends that account for this fact. One of them according to Kamakshivilasa is that the Goddess had to absorb all the other shakthi forms to give a boon to Kama, the Hindu god of love. Another legend attributes it to the Raja Rajeswaripose of the deity that signifies an absolute control over the land under the deity's control. Legend has it that Kamakshi offered worship to a Shivalingam made out of sand, under a mango tree and gained Shiva's hand in marriage.

FESTIVALS

 Four worship services are offered each day. The annual festival falls in Spring, in the Tamil month of Masi, which runs from mid-March to mid-April. During this time the chariot festival (Ther) and lake festival, (Theppam) are held. Other festivals include Navaratri, Aadi and Aippasi Pooram, Sankara Jayanthi and Vasanta Utsavam in the Tamil month of Vaikasi. All Fridays are considered sacred, though the Fridays in the Tamil months of Adi (mid-July to mid-August) and Thai (mid-January to mid-February) are celebrated.
